WIP 2026
From 2004-onward, Mindscape series and New Horizon (Failed Attempt at Straight Lines)
Research conducted while living in Los Angeles and travelling to visit family in Northern California and the rugged West of Ireland, this series of mixed media drawing/paintings using ink and acrylic on canvas and paper mark these travels. From aerial perspective views of Griffith Park to the views above and among clouds travelling to Ireland, and continuing with observations living in Rome with the many layers or stratification of the ancient, medieval and contemporary city. The surface is approached in several ways, with the mindscape works a loose grid is drawn then drawing obsessive detail upon detail. With the New Horizon/ Failed Attempts at Straight Lines with one horizontal line across the entire canvas or paper. This element is repeated over and over again across the picture plane. Slight variations in the movement of the hand add to the pattern as each additional line is recorded. The repetitive process refers to the interactive relationship between mountain ranges and urban sprawl as well as the influence of artists and designers from Cy Twombly, Mark Bradford, Agnes Martin to Peter Saville. The works begin with a failed attempt to draw a straight line, then this failed attempt is followed until the end of the canvas or paper.

An
integral aspect to Sean Gall’s art practice is walking, exploring and getting lost.
Whether in his previous home in Los Angeles, his mother’s home in the wild western
landscape of Co. Galway, Ireland, or his adopted city of Rome, he utilizes wandering as a
stimulus in his artistic research.
Mindscape Series mixes elements on canvas and paper, they are made of drawn ink and painted patterns. This series considers themes of urban sprawl mixed with formal elements in a dreamlike manner.
